How to measure for Curtain Poles

Below is a guide to measuring for curtain poles and blinds. Whilst we only supply ready made blinds and cascade curtains at the moment in our blind section, we hope to add some mtm blinds to our collection in the future so keep checking our website for details of new products.

Measuring for Curtain Poles:

The track or pole should extend beyond the window at either side by 10-20cm to allow the curtains to be drawn back away from the window. It should also sit about 15cm above the window to minimize light exposure.

The length of the pole specified is the length without the finials or pole ends so please bear in mind when ordering that the overall length will vary depending on the style and length of the finial. This is especially important if the window is near to another wall as you may need a pole with endstops rather than finials.

Most poles can be ceiling or wall fixed so please pay attention to this when ordering as if your window is especially close to the ceiling, you will need to order a pole that can be ceiling fixed.

All of our pre-packed poles can be easily cut down to size yourself using a hacksaw.

Measuring for Blinds:

Depending on the window type and personal preference, you can hang your blind inside or outside the recess.

Inside the recess:

Measuring inside the recess

First measure the width dimension followed by the drop dimension, i.e. the amount the fabric needs to drop when at its most extended. We advise that you measure in three seperate places for each dimension to allow for slight irregularities.

On roller blinds the actual fabric width will always be 35mm less than your measurements to allow for the fixings.

Ensure when you order that you specify your measurements are inside recess.

Outside the recess:

Measuring outside the recess

When hanging blinds outside the recess, you need to decide how much you want the fabric to over hang the recess, we recommend at least 7.5cm (3").

Measure your width dimensions first and add the min 7.5cm. Then measure the drop- this will be how far down the fabric hangs when at its most extended.

We recommend you measure each dimension in at least three seperate places to account for any slight irregularities.

On roller blinds the actual fabric width will always be 35mm less than your measurements to allow for the fixings.

Ensure when you order that you specify your measurements are outside recess.
